In the shadow of decades of intentional and unintentional deaths and injuries from firearms, APHA believes better public access to published, peer-reviewed research on firearms can lead to smarter evidence-based policies that enhance firearm safety and violence prevention. With more research and better policy, the public health community hopes to foster more productive conversations and interventions to stop the epidemic of violence in our communities.
ARTS IN A CHANGING AMERICA
Arts in a Changing America is a five-year initiative based out of the California Institute of the Arts. The mission is to reframe the national arts conversation by embracing the cultural assets of demographic change. ArtChangeUS is creating a vast network of artists, idea producers, and organizations that serves as an urgently needed catalyst to bring unheard leadership voices to the forefront of social discourse, arts production, and community change.
CAMPAIGN TO KEEP GUNS OFF CAMPUS
The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus works with colleges and universities across the country to oppose legislative policies that would force loaded, concealed guns on campuses. Since 2008, The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus has helped stop campus carry legislation in 18 states, and are the only national organization of its kind tasked to protect higher educational institutions and the communities they serve.
GIFFORDS LAW CENTER TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE
Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the nation’s leading policy organization dedicated to researching, writing, enacting, and defending proven laws and programs, is on a mission to save lives from gun violence by shifting culture, changing policies, and challenging injustice.
With hundreds of congregations as well as countless leaders and movement partners throughout the country, the LIVE FREE Campaign is working to end the scourges of gun violence, mass incarceration, and the criminalization of Black and Brown bodies that tears at the soul of our society.
MOMS DEMAND ACTION
Much like Mothers Against Drunk Driving was created to reduce drunk driving, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was created to demand action from legislators, state and federal; companies; and educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms.
THE NATIONAL COMPASSION FUND
The National Compassion Fund provides a single, trusted way for the public to donate directly to victims of a mass crime, such as a shooting or terrorist attack. It has been developed by the National Center for Victims of Crime in partnership with victims and family members from past mass casualty crimes, including those from Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech, Oak Creek Temple, NIU, Columbine, and 9/11.
STUDENTS PLEDGE AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE
The Student Pledge Against Gun Violence is a national program that honors the role that young people, through their own decisions, can play in reducing gun violence. This campaign against youth gun violence culminates each year on a Day of National Concern about Young People and Gun Violence. The program provides a means for beginning the conversation with young people about gun violence. It refers teachers, counselors, and community leaders to valuable resources, includes curriculum suggestions that can be integrated with existing academic programs, and contains information about how your school can participate.
THE SANDY HOOK PROMISE ACTION FUND
Enact sensible gun violence prevention laws, policy and regulations at a state and federal level, in the areas of mental health & wellness and gun safety that result in the reduction of gun-related death and injury.
VICTIM CONNECT RESOURCE CENTER
The VictimConnect Resource Center is a referral helpline where crime victims can learn about their rights and options confidentially and compassionately. AMERICAN STATE LEGISLATURES FOR GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION INC.
American State Legislators for Gun Violence Prevention (ASLGVP) is an independent nonpartisan coalition comprised of over 200 Democratic and Republican members of the legislatures of all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Our members include elected representatives of urban, suburban, and rural areas who have come together in recognition of the unique role state legislators must play in preventing gun violence.
COMMUNITY JUSTICE REFORM COALITION
CJRC is a national advocacy coalition that promotes and invests in evidence-based policies and programs to prevent gun violence and uplift criminal justice reforms in urban communities of color.
EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY SUPPORT FUND
Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund seeks to improve our understanding of the causes of gun violence and the means to reduce it – by conducting groundbreaking original research, developing evidence-based policies, and communicating this knowledge in the courts and the court of public opinion. Everytown also empowers survivors through the Everytown Survivor Network where survivors can connect with one another in-person and online as well as share their stories and take action to spare other families pain.
GUN VIOLENCE SURVIVORS FOUNDATION
Gun Violence Survivors Foundation supports survivors and their families through the emotional and physical aftermath of a crime involving a firearm in America. Our Foundation eases the financial impact placed upon them as a result of this crime. The GVS Foundation exists to aid survivors and their families by providing resources and services, and to assist in the funding required to promote mental and emotional healing.
MARCH FOR OUR LIVES ACTION FUND
The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is assure that no special interest group or political agenda is more critical than timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country. We demand morally-just leaders to rise up from both parties in order to ensure public safety.
NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS (NAMI)
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
#NoRA is a new kind of collective action. They're a culture hack. They're moving culture into a less violence place by counteracting the influence of NRA money in the American political system. They're part festival, part protest, part art installation. They're culture-focused, but results-driven, and will inspire new policy.
States United to Prevent Gun Violence is a grassroots network of 32 state affiliates working to make our communities and families safer. As part of our 50 State Solution to end gun violence, we support existing state-based gun violence prevention groups and bring new partners into the movement.
The mission at SURVIVORS EMPOWERED is to empower survivors of violence to use their stories to create a reduction in violence that we all desire. Survivors Empowered provides support and referrals for services to survivors of violence, and connect you to a support network of other survivors in your area.
THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME
The mission of the National Center for Victims of Crime is to forge a national commitment to help victims of crime rebuild their lives. We are dedicated to serving individuals, families, and communities harmed by crime.
THE TRAUMA SURVIVORS FOUNDATION
The Trauma Survivors Foundation seeks to improve the lives of children and families who have experienced a traumatic event by providing mental health services through a network of trained trauma therapists. We grant scholarships to high school and college seniors who are seeking careers in the mental health field in order to promote further research into trauma psychology. We help firefighters, police and EMS with scholarships to attend approved training classes. We train emergency service personnel to provide crisis intervention when a traumatic event occurs.
VIOLENCE POLICY CENTER
The Violence Policy Center (VPC) works to stop gun death and injury through research, education, advocacy, and collaboration. Founded in 1988 by Executive Director Josh Sugarmann, a native of Newtown, Connecticut, the VPC informs the public about the impact of gun violence on their daily lives, exposes the profit-driven marketing and lobbying activities of the firearms industry and gun lobby, offers unique technical expertise to policymakers, organizations, and advocates on the federal, state, and local levels, and works for policy changes that save lives.
